WALHALLA, N.D. — Whether you believe in ghosts or not, ghost stories, haunted houses and creepy legends often start with a nugget of truth. But over time, the fantasy can take hold. A century of telling and retelling can leave us wondering what to believe. That s the case with one of North Dakota s enduring ghost stories: the legend of White Lady Lane. Near Walhalla, North Dakota, a woman in a white gown is said to wander in the darkness, searching for a peace she never found in life. Retellings place her near County Road 9 and the Tetrault Woods, where a narrow road leads to a crossing known in the legend as Eddie s Bridge. A section of County Road 9 in Pembina County is nicknamed "White Lady Lane" for the appearance of a ghostly apparition in a white gown seen wandering near Eddie's Bridge.
